This month’s post is from Jerusha Mather, one of the inaugural Australian Academy of Science STEM Women Changemakers – a group of women ranging from start-up founders to organisational advocates, who are using their knowledge, experience and networks to share their ideas and solutions for gender equity in Australian science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Jerusha is changing the way the next generation of scientists and doctors learn, through an innovative Instagram initiative. Read on to hear more and find out how you can help!
Technology is evolving. Education is changing. So, here at Can Pre -Med, we started to think about how we can combine the two together and make a tangible difference.
Statistics show that:
> 1 billion people use Instagram every month.
AND
 > 500 million people use Instagram Stories every day.
Are you thinking what I am thinking? Let us put education on the gram (Yes that is right, I meant Instagram).
HelloOOOOO, My name is Jerusha Mather. I am a PhD student in the Medical and Biological Sciences at Victoria University. I am also the founder of the Instagram page, @canpremed3. Whereby, we aim to make science education enjoyable and empower and educate the next generation of doctors and scientists. We do this by creating fun science content on Instagram. We aim to create a free graphical textbook that medical science students can use as a study resource.
BUT, we cannot do this alone. We need your help. We are looking for “creative and enthusiastic” volunteer content creators to assist us with creating high quality science content for this page.
The content creator can email us (a) science Instagram illustration (s) on any science topic (created on a graphic design software such as Canva) along with a short and simple caption relating to the illustration (s), regularly (1-2 posts per week) or sporadically (1 -2 posts monthly). The topics can be related to biology, chemistry, physics and maths and / or their study tips and tricks.
Our primary aim is to break down complicated science topics into easier and simpler (more meaningful) terms.
